Formed in 1999 in the state of Iowa, Driver of the Year have since day one been the underdog in this over-hyped, ultra snobby world of the indie music scene… and really they are fine with it… really. They have been pumping the faces of young ladies and gents, of course, live across the U.S. with straight up rock – yes, rock’n’roll – for many years. The very thing your indie world was built on, this is where Driver of the Year have been waiting for you to walk over to and pick up that bong, take off your white belt and relax, take it easy… no one is going to know you were listening to a band from Iowa. But shit, here is your chance; forge the new fucking road in your town, be the one to turn your friends on to this band. I mean, come on, we… I mean, they, have played many shows with the sheik and savvy likes of Spoon, French Kicks, Quasi, The Apples in Stereo, Joan of Arc, The Dismemberment Plan, Rainer Maria, Hockey Night and Silkworm to name a few.
Driver of the Year seek to unite all the best flavors that soaked into their heads through the smoke and brews of 30 years of musical obsession. They give you the swagger of Roxy Music with the thumping pulse of Talking Heads, a touch of grit ala Sabbath, and the sheer wit of Steely Dan… yes, for real, Steely Dan are bad ass, just ask my step dad. Hell, Driver of the Year have just recently finished a few songs for the adult film Dana DeArmond Does the Internet, released through VividAlt. So, well, you have it all now – your sex, drugs and rock’n’roll.
Driver of the Year Will Destroy You, due out the end of July, is the group’s third release, a joint venture with Future Appletree Records and Nail in the Coffin Records. It was recorded once again by the band themselves in the same basement that brought you Statik (2005), but this time, armed with a divorce, drugs, booze and the digital recording platform, they stepped it up a touch with the songs, adding layers of ear candy for your burned out mind. Driver of the Year Will Destroy You is an album of mantras for those that have lost hope for love and dived deep into the world of lust, and really by the sounds of it, you would fit right in.
